“Food is forcing people to eat peanut shells”

The food crisis has escalated amid escalating violence in civil war-torn Sudan. The World Food Program reports that people fleeing their homes for their lives are at risk of starvation and death.

The United Nations agency says time is running out to prevent famine in the Darfur region in western Sudan. The escalation of violence is destroying entire nations.

“Food is forcing people to eat peanut shells,” Michael Dunford, World Food Program director for East Africa, said on Friday. If aid does not reach them soon, Darfur and other conflict-torn areas of Sudan could see widespread famine and death.

 

CNN reported that the civil war broke

out in April 2023 when Sudanese military and paramilitary forces, the Rapid Support Forces, clashed in April 2023. Acts such as sexual violence, genocide and killing of civilians have forced people to flee their homes and become refugees.

Three other workers were injured. The latest violence occurred when the Rapid Support Forces surrounded the city of El Fash, the capital of North Darfur state.

Describing the situation, Toby Hayward, the UN Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, said: “There were indiscriminate killings in the city and its surroundings, the systematic burning of entire villages and continuous aerial bombardment.”

UNICEF said that El Fasher includes 500,000 people who fled violence from other areas.
